A guardian home is a family that receives a free dog/puppy from the breeder with the condition that it will be used for breeding until an agreed upon time. More breeding stock is generally needed to create quality lines when breeding doodles than when breeding purebreds since it requires multiple breeds and involves more variables. Guardian homes are a great solution in that they allow us to expand our program without becoming a commercial/kennel breeder and they ensure that our breeding dogs get the love and attention they need. On the other hand, the guardian home benefits by getting a breeding-quality dog that represents the best of the best from our program at no cost.
Qualified families will receive a puppy/dog free of charge, however, are expected to take on the cost of the general care for the dog. This includes vaccinations, dog food, grooming, etc. We cover all breeding related costs for the dog.
A prospective breeding dog in our guardian home program will be bred once it is of age and has passed all of its health testing. A guardian home experience will look differently depending on whether you get a male or female:
For females, we will collect the dog for a few days when she is in heat (typically 3-5 days) to breed her. She will then be returned home until around a week from her due date, at which point she will be taken again to whelp and raise puppies. After puppies are born, you can expect your dog back in about 6-8 weeks. Guardian families are welcome to visit during this time. Those that own a female dog for our program must be able to detect a heat cycle and keep her away from intact male dogs throughout the duration of the heat. Depending on the female, we breed 3-5 litters and then pay to spay and retire her from our program (typically the female is around 4-6 years old), where she will then live out the rest of her life with her guardian home.
For males, we will collect the dog up to several times per year for breedings. To be courteous to our stud guardian homes, we will aim to give them about a week notice for when the dog will be needed. Depending on the distance the stud dog lives from us, we may keep him for the duration of the breeding (3-5 days) before returning him. We require studs to be available for breeding for 5 years, at which point we will pay for the dog to be neutered and live out the rest of his life in his guardian home.
While a guardian family has a dog in our breeding program, we will also need to occasionally visit the dog and may even need to take the dog for a few hours to get photos for our website, advertising, social media, etc.
